When the sun goes down on August 15th, the competition heats up at Pitch Under the Lights
Make a team, lace up those kicks and take the field for an evening of kickball and other field games run by our friends at Come Play Detroit — all to raise money for Brilliant Detroit. NEXTGen Detroit is taking its annual kickball tourney and bringing it to “the old Tigers’ Stadium” for one night only.
Pitch Under the Lights is a great night for players and spectators alike! Come cheer on your favorite team and enjoy food, music and more!
Players get dinner on us, and there will be food for purchase for spectators. Dietary laws observed.
The Corner Ball Park (formerly Tiger Stadium) is located at 1680 Michigan Ave, Detroit, MI 48216. Free, secure parking is available in the lot adjacent to the field at the corner of Fisher Service Dr. and Cochrane St. in Detroit. After Pitch, everyone is invited to celebrate at McShane’s Irish Pub & Whiskey located right next to the field at 1460 Michigan Ave, Detroit, MI 48216. McShane’s will donate 10% of sales from Pitch players and fans to Brilliant Detroit, and they’re giving us their entire patio to spread out on!
Thinking about forming or joining a team for Pitch? Awesome! Here’s what you need to know…
How do you win? Glad you asked. Here’s the point structure for this year’s tournament:
Brilliant Detroit is dedicated to building “kid success” families and neighborhoods where families with children 0-8 have what they need to be school ready, healthy and stable. They do this by providing proven programming and support year round out of their Brilliant Detroit houses in high-need neighborhoods.
Literacy is a core pillar of Brilliant Detroit and deeply tied to a vision of a Detroit where all children are ready for school and reading at grade level by 3rd grade. Only 14% of Detroit students are reading at grade level by 3rd grade and, because this is the pivotal point where students move from learning to read into reading to learn, their success in school and life depends on their literacy abilities.
Brilliant Detroit has 75 organizational partners that conduct evidence-based programming our sites, and many of these organizations have a literacy focus. Examples of our literacy programs include: ABC Mouse, Family Reading Journey, Individual Tutoring, LENA Start, Pathways to Literacy, Play and Learns, Raising a Reader and Reading is Fundamental. You can learn more about all of these programs here.
Through engaging families in these evidence-based programs and others like them and by coordinating these services to meet the self-described goals of participants, Brilliant Detroit builds kid success neighborhoods with, for and by neighbors.
